Set in a ring of small mountains Athens can get very smoggy and very, very hot in August so try to go there when it is cooler. There is plenty to see in Athens of course and your first stop if you have not done so before is the heavy trek up the Acropolis to see the Parthenon. This is also worth if for the views across the city and the Aegean over at Pireus. On the way down there are plenty of cafes and bars for refreshment and then a lunch at one of the many restaurants in the Plaka which is spread around the base of the Acropolis. The Plaka is a network of tiny streets jam- packed with vine shaded restaurants and cafes plus the not so pretty tourist shops selling tat.

If you have time visit the National Archaeological Museum
The National Archaeological Museum ranks among the top ten museums in the world. It's impressive collection is housed in a beautiful neoclassic building near the juncture of Alexandras Avenue on Patission Avenue. It is worth a visit to see such famous statues as the Poseidon (for many years on the Greek banknotes) and the Boy on a Horse.

The recent Olympic Games has improved transport in Athens The gay scene in Athens is not so large but there are one or two bars and clubs plus the usual sex shops and cinemas (around Ommonia Square) Worth visiting are LAMDA CLUB Lembessi st. & 9 Syngrou Ave.
