Gay
Icon: Who? When? Where?
JOHN
SCHLESINGER
Schlesinger
won an Academy Award for his first US film Midnight
Cowboy, 1969. It was nominated for seven awards
and it was the first X-rated film to win the Academy
Award for best picture. With its coy attitude to
homosexuality it soon became dated, but at the time
it struck a chord with the general audience. In
Sunday, Bloody Sunday, (1971), the treatment of
homosexuality was more explicit. John Schlesinger
regarded the story as a personal statement and his
own coming out publicly as gay.
In 1966 John Schlesinger began a lifelong relationship
with the photographer Michael Childers. At the end
of 2001 he suffered a stroke from which he did not
fully recover, and his ability to speak was affected.
In 2002 Bafta held a special ceremony in Los Angeles
to present John Schlesinger with a lifetime achievement
award. He was not able to attend himself and Dustin
Hoffman read his acceptance speech. (More...)

40 – Edited Highlights - Adrian Gillan
First
Monday mews meet of 2007. Boss
back from Azores. Adoring, pining Birmans descend,
and wrap around her like minks. Stunning. Trev’s
eyes almost pop out – his “other side”
clearly to the fore. She announces plans for special
Circa events in Art Galleries in Mayfair in February
to capitalize on the sales.
Bump into Charlie leaving Inge’s as I arrive
for my session, Tuesday lunchtime.
“Well, what a coincidence,” I mutter.
“Why don’t you just give up, Charlie?
I really couldn’t give a shit who you’re
shagging – even if they are all of my friends
and acquaintances. Why don’t you try Kev?
Or my nutty neighbour? I used to think you were
sweet. Now, you’re just a nagging pain. Now,
fuck off.” Inge “Thor” –
fully clothed throughout, like some blushing Adam,
post-Eden – fumbles his way through a sequence
of pretty uninspired basic massages, avoiding my
groin altogether. Pay; but say fear he’ll
lose business if he doesn’t pull himself together.
In foul mood at Circa social in the evening, too.
Leave as Charlie shows. He’s really bugging
me now.

PRIDE LONDON:
– 30 June 2007 - VOLUNTEERS NEEDED
PRIDE
needs help throughout the year with planning, fundraising
and so on. Their biggest need for volunteers is
on Pride Day itself when they need several hundred
volunteer stewards to help marshall the Parade and
other events. No prior experience is necessary as
training will be given.
All volunteers receive a Pride Privilege Card granting
you discounts in a number of businesses in London,
and also national Cinema chains and online holidays.
If you're already on the Pride database and still
receiving their email mailshots, there's no need
to re-register, but if your contact details have
changed or if you'd like to get involved, then email
Pride at volunteers@PrideLondon.org
We very much look forward
to meeting up with CIRCA members and guests at our
CIRCA New Year drinks party at ROUGE NOIR on Tuesday
30 January.
