THE DAILY CIRCA: QUOTATIONS OF THE DAY

Keep up to date make the Daily Circa your home page; World, Uk, Gay and Circa news, horoscopes, cartoon, quotes of the day, this day in history and much more,

Samuel Butler - A man should be just cultured enough to be able to look with suspicion upon culture at first, not second hand.

Desiderius Erasmus - War is delightful to those who have had no experience of it.

David Hockney - Shadows sometimes people don't see shadows. The Chinese of course never paint them in pictures, oriental art never deals with shadow. But I noticed these shadows and I knew it meant it was sunny.

Truman Capote - It is the want to know the end that makes us believe in God, or witchcraft, believe, at least, in something. …more…

AUGUST 2010 BLOG

Gay BlogsNutty Neighbour all excited when pops round to my Soho pad on the one night off from his “hole”. Says looking forward to some decent daytime TV, for a change, now that condom advertising will be allowed any time pre the 9pm watershed, from 1 Sept. Such ads will not be permitted, tho’, during or around shows aimed at under-10s - to spare the likes of my weebie Toby, and not-so-little Sven. Nutty fully agrees with HIV gurus that commercials merely promoting brands aren’t enough – says is more important that viewers, not least gay male ones, receive the info they need to protect themselves and their partners. The more graphic the better, vies he!

Burman-flanked Boss uses mid-month Mon morn mews meet, in between seemingly endless Prides, to celebrate Circa’s X,000th member; and also raise a fluted glass or two to gay mega-charity Stonewall, now marking its 21st year. Founded in 1989 by a small group of activists fighting Section 28, Stonewall has since expanded to campaign for LGB equality at home, at school and at work. To the next 21 years! ...more...

GAY ICONS: Bill (William Ralph) Blass

At the age of sixteen he was appearing in an amateur theatre production when he was spotted by Eddie Marsh (later Sir Edward), an influential patron of the arts, who took a fancy to him. Eddie Marsh introduced him to the world of Ivor Novello and Ned Lathom. This led to him also meeting Beverley Nichols for whom Godfrey Winn developed a crush.

Godfrey Winn began his professional career as a boy actor in Galsworthy's Old English at the Haymarket Theatre, London. He then played in St. Joan and in Noël Coward's The Marquise, at the Criterion Theatre, London. He began writing with his first novel Dreams Fade in 1928, and after several more novels he turned to freelance journalism which included pieces in Woman and Woman and Home with titles such as 'Do We Understand Our Parents' and 'The Girl That I Marry'.

Godfrey Winn began to write pieces for the press that emulated the style of Beverley Nichols with its sentimental whimsy. Beverley Nichols may have been flattered at first but came to regard him as a rival. Godfrey Winn became a star columnist for the Daily Mirror from 1936 to 1938, and then for the Sunday Express from 1938 to 1942.

Later in the Second World War he served in the Royal Navy as an Ordinary Seaman. After the Second World War he lectured across the United States on two occasions. He continued to write books and he also appeared on the radio and television. more

I remember my first holiday with a boyfriend. We went to Paris and pushed our little single beds together, but he kicked up such a fuss when I admitted fooling around, just a wee trifle, whilst on my own in Berlin the month prior, that I dumped him up the Eiffel Tower.

So might I - I thus wondered - fare any better on holiday with gay “mates” instead? Just a bunch of single gay male friends on a bog standard group package to Gran Can or ‘biza: what simpler? No smooching off into cliquey pairs, no jealous bickering and no hand-in-hand promenading gingerly down streets too straight for queer romance. Just one long tanked-up doss. ...more...
