THE DAILY CIRCA: QUOTATIONS OF THE DAY
Keep up to date make the Daily Circa your home page; World, Uk, Gay and Circa news, horoscopes, cartoon, quotes of the day, this day in history and much more..
Antony Sher: As a gay Jewish white South African, I belong to quite a lot of minority groups. You constantly have to question who you are, what you are and whether you have the courage to be who you are.
Benjamin Britten: Composing is like driving down a foggy road toward a house. Slowly you see more details of the house-the color of the slates and bricks, the shape of the windows. The notes are the bricks and the mortar of the house.
Francis Bacon: Age appears to be best in four things; old wood best to burn, old wine to drink, old friends to trust, and old authors to read.
Boy George: The ultimate goal is to be more satisfied. I really don't believe you get wiser because you get older. It's a choice, perhaps not to take some things so seriously. ...more...
TALKING DIRTY - Circa Grapevine Editor: Adrian Gillan
We can all be Bards in our own bedrooms
If the English language is one of our greatest assets then why - in bed - are we a nation of frigid mutes? Why do we underestimate and neglect the latent power of words to conjure Eros? I’m not suggesting a dictionary and elocution lessons - although many’s the climax spoiled by my having to ask some bad boy mumbler, “Sorry, what did you say?” at his point of no return.
Thoughts are framed by words so why not communicate and conjure with words better? It’s both the sounds and the connotations they evoke that raise the heat and horn.
Slang’s great, but it’s so refreshing sometimes to get back to basics - to revisit the classics, and not just in medical scenarios.. ...more...

THE STONEWALL AWARDS - Thursday 6th November – V & A Museum
The evening starts with a champagne and canapés reception from 7.00pm before moving through to the spectacular Raphael Gallery for the Awards Ceremony. After which the evening continues with further champagne, canapés, food bowls and musical entertainment
Now in its third year, the awards have become an essential fixture in the lesbian and gay calendar. Sponsored once again this year by Barclays, the ceremony is acclaimed for its celebration of those who have had a positive impact on the lives of lesbian and gay people in Britain. Last year's winners included Dan Gillespie Sells, Val McDermid and Alan Johnson MP
The awards recognise outstanding accomplishment in politics, the media, the arts and sport. A panel of expert judges will make the choice, although once again Stonewall's friends and close friends are being asked to vote in three categories - Hero of the Year, Community Group of the Year (worth £5,000) and the rather less salubrious Bigot of the Year. …more information…
Sher achieved fame through his portrayal of the predatory heterosexual lecturer in the TV adaptation of The History Man and was also acclaimed for his role as Richard III. Sher was awarded Knight Commander of the Order of the British Empire for his services to the arts and be known as Sir Antony Sher, KBE.
He had a relationship with Jim Hooper for some years. The Royal Shakespeare Company theatre director, Gregory Doran, became his boyfriend in 1986.
After Ian McKellen had announced his own gayness on the radio, and Simon Callow had come out as gay in his book On Being an Actor, Antony Sher finally came out publicly as gay with his book of paintings and drawings.
His finest achievement was hisRichard III; "like a spider in a bottle" said one critic. ...more...

SPENCER:THE SECRETARIAL DIARIES
Edited
Highlights !!! Adrian Gillan
Pen weekly Circa-branded Capital Queer column, Wednesday afternoon. Have been shocked by the fact a tribunal has decided in favour of Islington registrar, Lillian Ladele, who refused to conduct same-sex civil partnerships on the grounds that it conflicted with her religious beliefs – those same beliefs, incidentally, seemingly permitting her to have a son outside wedlock, as tabloids subsequently unearthed! The ruling sanctions the right of religious people to discriminate against others they disagree with, setting people of faith above the law. Surely, public servants like registrars have a duty to serve all members of the public without fear or favour. Once society lets some people opt out of upholding the law, where will it end, I ask - with police officers? Solicitors? Fire fighters? Doctors? The council is appealing the tribunal’s judgment. ...more...
