FLY AWAY GAY: QUEER EXPATS
From the Cape to the Keys: Adrian Gillan’s
Top Ten Tips for wannabe gay ex-pats who’ve
had enough of UK life!
The
UK government estimates 13 million British nationals
now live oversees. A disproportionately high number
of these expats are likely to be gay – seeking
out new lives, often in warmer, equally or more
gay-friendly climes, perhaps with fewer family ties
to keep them home. Some move with folks when young;
some study or work abroad and stay; others cling
to Blighty - until they retire. However don't rush
- try holidays or reconnaissance trips first. Visit
often and for extended periods - at different times
of the year. Can you cope when the sun doesn’t
shine ...more...
MARCEL
PROUST: GAY ICON
He
mixed with the richest and highest possible society
of France (mostly in the Paris Town Houses or at
the Country estates and Chateaux of his wealthy
friends) and based many on his characters on real
life people.
The most famous example is that the hugely rich
and outrageously camp Baron Charlus was based
on a similar real life person called Robert de
Montesquiou. After the deaths of his parents he
increasingly withdrew from social life and lived
mainly in a cork-lined room in his apartment on
the Boulevard Haussmann, writing mostly at night.
Marcel wasn't a great one for sexual partners
but he did visit male brothels and had a brief
fling with his chauffeur. His last public appearance
was at the New Year's Eve ball given by the discreetly
homosexual Comte de Beaumont in 1921.
His "Remembrance of Things Past" was
number 4 of the list of the top 100 gay books
compiled in the USA in 1999. In 1999 the first
volume, "Swann's Way" was 13th on the
list of sales by Amazon.com.uk/. His greatest
achievement was undoubtedly "A la Recherche
du Temps Perdu" considered by some to be
the greatest novel of 20th Century ...more...

SPENCER:THE
SECRETARIAL DIARIES
Edited
Highlights !!! Adrian Gillan
Day
off Monday; in lieu of Reading. Boss rings, regardless,
saying Capital Queer have invited me to pen another
column – someone’s dropped out –
deadline, lunchtime! Inspired by Sunday’s
fetish event, opt for piece re the law governing
SM sex being overly-restrictive; and looking set
to get yet more so. Ever since “Operation
Spanner” and the subsequent trial in 1990,
SM sex that leaves marks that are more than “trifling
or transient” - the meaning of which has never
been clearly defined and is left to the jury - has
technically been illegal. Work to bring about changes
to the law as a result of this is being carried
out by the Spanner Trust (www.spannertrust.org)
