the iconic London LGBT bookshop’s history, significance and continued struggle for survival in its 30th year

Once upon a time in the late 70’s an ambitious, geeky, literate and politically left-wing group called Gay Icebreakers got together and decided to open the UK’s first ever gay bookshop. Founder, Ernest Hole, wanted to choose a name that beamed out across a then still largely prejudiced society and declared “we’re here, we’re queer, we’re staying and, look…now we’re getting smart about it, too.” Taken from the title of a 1950’s Ivor Novello musical, it may sound a little provincial today, but Gay’s the Word was more than just the name for a bookshop; it was a pioneering statement of deliberate visibility in days dark with prejudice. This annual event, now in its eighth year, sees 50 chic dinner parties taking place simultaneously in the capital's best restaurants and private homes. 

After dinner, guests will be chauffeur driven from their dinner venues to a fabulous party at Café de Paris for Camitz vodka cocktails, champagne, music and entertainment. Sophie, a longstanding supporter of THT, will perform an exclusive set for THT Supper Club guests at the Café de Paris.

All the restaurants and caterers involved in the Supper Club have donated their services free of charge to raise funds for THT. Some of the restaurants and caterers already involved this year include Nobu Berkeley St, Hakkasan, Nahm, Benares, Rhodes W1, Annie Fryer Catering, Stem London, William Norris & Company, Cecconi’s, China Tang, and Alain Ducasse at The Dorchester.
 
In previous years hosts and guests at the Supper Club have included Erin O’Connor, Tracey Emin, Ewan McGregor, Andy and Patti Wong, Anton Bilton and Lisa B, Tom Aikens, Graham Norton and Jodie Kidd. The evening starts with a champagne and canapés reception from 7.00pm before moving through to the spectacular Raphael Gallery for the Awards Ceremony. After which the evening continues with further champagne, canapés, food bowls and musical entertainment

Now in its third year, the awards have become an essential fixture in the lesbian and gay calendar. Sponsored once again this year by Barclays, the ceremony is acclaimed for its celebration of those who have had a positive impact on the lives of lesbian and gay people in Britain. Last year's winners included Dan Gillespie Sells, Val McDermid and Alan Johnson MP

The awards recognise outstanding accomplishment in politics, the media, the arts and sport. A panel of expert judges will make the choice, although once again Stonewall's friends and close friends are being asked to vote in three categories - Hero of the Year, Community Group of the Year (worth £5,000) and the rather less salubrious Bigot of the Year … more information …

McQueen, who describes himself as the "pink sheep of the family," realized he was gay when he was six years old. However it was not until he was eighteen that he came out to his family. Having grown up in an often homophobic working class environment, he feared how his family, especially his father and older brother, would react.

Alexander McQueen's early runway collections developed his reputation for controversy and shock tactics (earning the title "enfant terrible" and "the hooligan of English fashion"), with trousers aptly named "bumsters", and a collection entitled "Highland Rape". It has also been claimed that he was on income support and that he needed to change his name for his first show so that he could continue to receive benefits.

McQueen is extremely open about his homosexuality. He discusses his private life freely and humorously in interviews. In summer 2000 McQueen married his twenty-four-year-old lover George Forsyth, a documentary filmmaker.
