GAY
FAWKES NIGHT?
Blazing
faggots! Adrian Gillan (Editor Daily Circa)
Over
400 years on, sparks fly as Adrian Gillan explores
new theories which suggest that it may have been
King James I's sexuality - not his views, nationality
or religion - that led to Guy’s famous 1605
plot.
The Great Gay Gunpowder Theory – There's a
credible and increasingly-respected "conspiracy
theory" that fanatical Catholic Guy was in
fact a “fool Guy”, set-up by queer King
James' supporters in order to fail and thereby boost
James' popularity: a popularity which was low because
of his very public string of gay lovers, and not
- contrary to most history books - because of his
Scottish connections or Protestant faith; or since
he believed so-outrageously in the Divine Right
of Kings. Hence – the theory goes - the Gunpowder
Plot would never have been coaxed-into-being had
not James been gay. And so Guy Fawkes Night may,
in fact, be our nation’s unwitting celebration
of how an unpopular queer king conned the masses
in order to win sympathy - so they might “forgive”
his highly homosexual shenanigans. A PR stunner!
Explosive stuff! (more…)

NOEL
PIERCE COWARD
Gay
Icon: Who? When? Where?
He
was born and raised in Teddington, Gloucestershire
and began acting in January 1911 at the age of 12,
playing Prince Mussel in The Goldfish by Lila Field.
At 14 he appeared in Peter Pan.
He shot to fame in 1924 as the writer and star of
the play 'The Vortex'. His work is full of frivolity,
satire, and wit. He never referred publicly to his
own homosexuality, and would not allow his biographer
Sheridan Morley to mention it, because of fears
of losing royalties. He seemed to believe that the
public was unsure about his sexuality, despite him
writing and singing songs like 'Mad About the Boy'.
His 'A Song at Twilight' has the closeted character
Sir Hugh Latymer who is based on Somerset Maugham.
Noël Coward himself is the model for the character
Beverly Carlton in 'The Man Who Came to Dinner',
(1939).
Later in life, when his plays were out of favour,
he mostly earned his living as a cabaret performer,
singing such songs as “Mad Dogs and Englishmen”
and “Why Must the Show Go On?” (more...)

THE SECRETARIAL DIARIES
Blog
30 – Edited Highlights Adrian Gillan
Not
due at the mews, Monday morning, I wander out,
through sunlit Soho. Fresh autumn breeze invigorates
my senses. Feel more alive – in the now
– than have in ages. Glide past St Anne’s
on Dean Street which offers LGBT-welcoming masses
every other Sunday. Only just resist an impulse
to go in. Though a militant atheist, have always
felt like going into a church whenever felt overpowering
urge to say a BIG “thank you” –
like now, for having been given a second chance.
Chunter m
y Window’s Life Plan TM like a
mantra Tuesday morning, whilst taking a long soak
- Mous and Cous gamboling on the bathroom floor.
Everyone’s been amazing. Boss had told most
members I was just “a little off colour”.
Still inundated with messages, email and text.
Boy moved out, “to give more space”.
Gay-friendly housing agency, FlatOut, had found
him a flat-share in a basement just off Soho Square,
so still very near. Even Josh paid me not just
last month’s rent; not just this month’s;
but next month’s, too! (more...)

PRIDE LONDON
2007 - COMMUNITY FORUM - City Hall - 15 November
Pride
London 2006 was the most successful ever in the

PARTNERSHIPS
AND TAX WORKSHOP - Thursday 30 November - 6.30pm
Could
inheritance tax take 40% of your joint assets? What
about Gay Divorce? As more out LGBT people reach
retirement age, how can we plan for the lifestyle
we'd like to lead as senior citizens? The Gay Business
Association is holding a workshop on all aspects
of retirement planning. Among the topics will be
a discussion on how gay couples could face an inequitous
charge to inheritance tax. In many cases this tax
could take up to 40% of joint assets. All are welcome
At: New Connaught Rooms, 60 Great Queen Street,
Holborn, London WC2.

GAY ANIMALS
'COME OUT' IN OSLO EXHIBITION: "Against Nature?"
Breaking
what is taboo for some, the Oslo Natural History
Museum is showing an exhibition entitled "Against
Nature?" which displays examples of gay behaviour
in pictures and models in the animal kingdom which
organisers say is the first of its kind in the world.
From beetles to swans and creatures considered to
have a more macho image, such as lions and sperm
whales, gay behaviour has been detected in 1,500
species.
"As gay men and women are often confronted
with the argument that their way of living is against
the principles of nature, we thought that ... as
a scientific institution, we could at least show
that this is not true," exhibition organiser
Geir Soeli tells AFP.
The first documented cases of gay behaviour in animals
dates back to the Greek philosopher Aristotle who,
more than three centuries before Christ, was intrigued
by the promiscuity of male hyenas.
The subject was then ignored for many centuries,
with incidents of male animal coupling conveniently
described as part of fighting rituals.
" .. animals have strong instincts ... maybe
they're having sex just because it's good,"
Soeli adds. (more...)
We very much look forward
to meeting up with CIRCA members and guests at our
CIRCA Christmas drinks party at ROUGE NOIR on Tuesday
28 November.
