The former right-wing editor of the Sunday Telegraph famously goaded actor Ian McKellen into coming out on live radio in 1988 but has more recently hinted at homosexual experiences in his own past and even shown support for same-sex marriage. A gifted writer, wrote “Perry” after Portillo’s admissions: “Whereas there is no satisfactory substitute for alcohol drinking at university there is, mercifully, a kind of satisfactory substitute for heterosexual love - as Michael Portillo was lucky enough to discover.” … more...

Only Capital Queer ring up Tuesday, asking my opinion on rumours that organizers are pulling the plug on the Mr Gay UK competition. Is the annual boy babe romp cliché, passé or OK? Mainstream beauty pageants fell from favour decades ago. So is Mr Gay UK harmless, ironic fun, immune from political correctness; a serious attempt at finding and celebrating a positive role model, albeit one in no small part defined by looks; or crass and stereotypic just like any other “beauty” pageant, ask they? My verdict, as printed: “It is largely light-hearted fun. But perhaps not entirely harmless. Like other beauty contests, Mr Gay UK reinforces a particular idea of what constitutes good, desirable looks. It helps perpetuate the clichéd gay images that are standard in most gay mags and vids. That can be psychologically and emotionally damaging to gay people who cannot measure up to this stereotyped gay ideal.” ...more...

The Festival got off to a fantastic start with their Opening Night screening of “Itty Bitty Titty Committee” at Odeon West End, followed by an after-show party at Mint Leaf in Haymarket.

The assembled crowd was then treated to the first public airing of this year's Festival trailer, inspired by Paul Harfleet's Pansy Project. Itty Bitty... proved itself to be the perfect choice for Opening Night - an anarchic, politically charged adrenaline rush of a film, with a stunning all-girl cast, a deadpan sense of humour, and a final comic set-piece that had the crowd applauding and cheering.
