With many thousands of LGBT travellers attending Pride events and holidaying abroad this summer, Circa heeds timely advice from the UK’s Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) on how best to stay safe whilst straddling the gay globe.

“Every year, numerous LGBT Brits travel to global Pride events, or more generally abroad,” says Steve Jewitt-Fleet from the UK’s Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO), which boasts its own highly active internal LGBT staff support group; and was one of the first such government departments in the world to actively address the concerns of LGBT travellers - having waged campaigns as far back as 2002 to help assure all queer voyagers that they’d get effective practical help and advice should they encounter problems overseas

Recently, the FCO initiated an official project requiring all its 261 embassies, high commissions and other diplomatic outposts around the world to proactively support and promote LGBT human rights in their countries. It issued an LGBT Toolkit highlighting the British policy on gay rights and illustrating how to "provide added value to equality and non-discrimination work" on the ground, locally. ...more...

SPENCER:THE SECRETARIAL DIARIES

O'Grady was listed in The Observer as one of the 50 funniest acts in British comedy and by The Independent at number 32 in their list of most influential gay men and women in Britain.

He holds many awards, and has won the Best TV Comedy Entertainment Personality category of the British Comedy Awards, a BAFTA, two Royal Television Society and three National Television Awards. He was appointed Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) in the 2008 Birthday Honours.

It was when O'Grady went to Manila where he worked as a waiter in Gussy's Bar (also a brothel) that he got the idea for Lily Savage, his now infamous drag alter-ego. On his return to London he achieved fame with his creation of Lily, initially playing to gay clubs and pubs up and down the country including the The Royal Vauxhall Tavern in London.

After appearing at The Edinburgh Festival, for which he was nominated for a Perrier Award, he became more mainstream. Lily went on to make appearances on ITV programmes including This Morning, Blankety Blank, Lily Live and as the 'On the Bed Presenter' on The Big Breakfast.
O'Grady retired his Lily Savage character around 2004. He claimed she had "seen the light, taken the veil and packed herself off to a convent in France" but recently on his current TV show, he said, "she's escaped the convent and she's heading towards these shores!” which may signal the return of the Lily Savage character. ...more...
