HALL OF SHAME
Beyond the Grave: Great British Dead Gay Hate Icons - Times may change but some things stay the same. Circa’s own shameless Adrian Gillan roll-calls our first “Hall of Shame”: Great British Gay Hate Icons from amongst the dead - lest we forget…

1. Mary Whitehouse (1910 - 2001) - Self-styled one-woman antidote to the 60s, Mary-So-Contrary shut Gay News by suing them for blasphemy when they published a poem where Christ professes gay love. She founded the Clean Up TV Campaign, which became the National Viewers’ and Listeners’ Association (now Mediawatch), nagging broadcasters to keep the "moral darkness" of homosexuality off-screen. The Gay Liberation Front famously infiltrated one of her public meetings in 1971 to release mice, snog each other, dress up as clergy and conduct an impromptu sermon urging all present to "Carry on Sinning!" Halleluiah.

Gay Icon: Who? When? Where?
T.E.LAWRENCE :

He joined the archeological digs of Hittite settlements under the direction of Flinders Petrie at Carchemish on the banks of the Euphrates river between 1911 and 1914. Here T. E. Lawrence fell in love with the 15-year-old Arab peasant boy, Salim Ahmed, whom he called Dahoum and he brought him on holiday to England. T. E. Lawrence and Dahoum were inseparable until Dahoum disappeared in 1916.

While he was living at his cottage at Clouds Hill in Dorset he had other authors to stay including George Bernard Shaw, E. M. Forster, Robert Graves and also Siegfried Sassoon. T. E. Lawrence's sexuality has been a matter of debate as he lived in times when men did not talk about their sexuality, particularly if they were soldiers. However, the closeness of his relationship with Dahoum attracted attention at the time. The BBC radio play Castle of the Star, (1992), most explicitly presented this love. His Greatest Achievement was The Seven Pillars of Wisdom and the exploits described therein. ...more...

SPENCER:THE SECRETARIAL DIARIES
Blog 60 -Edited Highlights !!! Adrian Gillan
Back to my roots on Sunday afternoon - in Chelmsford, Essex - to celebrate a kind of Pre-Pride, ahead of the town’s main September extravaganza. Star attraction is Sing-along-Grease, The Movie, plus a 70's party. Kerry appears, with one of her flirty nurses! Her liver’s defo on the mend and she’s allowed out on day-release if supervised and stays sober. Mum comes to join us and we pass a pleasant afternoon telling our favourite Essex Boy jokes. Q: How does an Essex boy turn the light off after sex? A: He shuts the car door. Q: Why do Essex boys wear briefs? A: To keep their ankles warm. Q. What does the label in an Essex boy’s briefs say? A. NEXT! more

BUTCH- A QUEENS STRUGGLE TO BECOME A KING - 22nd +23rd June , London

Menno, star of Sky TV’s “Naked Angels” and creator of the smash hit show “The Gaydar Diaries”, stars in his debut one-man show “BUTCH – A Queen’s Struggle To Become A King” at The Pleasance as part of the Pride Festival 07 on 22 & 23 June (21:45). "Honest, heartfelt and hysterical" - Fringe Report, May '07

Fed up with always being the token gay guy and tired of his effeminate mannerisms (“I’m so girly I nearly have periods”), Menno decides it’s time to ‘butch up’ get in touch with his masculine side.

This becomes especially important when he falls head over high heels for a closeted, black, ultra-masculine, straight-acting army captain who hates anything camp or even slightly ‘gay’.

However, his feminine side doesn’t take too kindly to his growing manhood, and it isn’t long before she sharpens her claws to stage a spectacular revolt – Two nights only! For more info and to book call 020 7609 1800 - click here for more details

BERNARD MILLER – STUNNING AND STYLISH PHOTOGRAPHY - LONDON

We are delighted to say that Bernard Miller will be taking all our Circa-Club photographs.

Miller is a photographer who has agreed to an uneasy truce with the onrushing world of digital picture-making. But who still tries to keep alive a bit of the old ways of doing things. "I love the way Renaissance portraitists attempted to portray the effect of light on people's faces - often, people whom we might not consider conventionally beautiful - and in so doing to convey something of their character, their spirit.

"I try to capture some of the same warmth, the same soft but directional light, in my photography. That's a little easier to do with film...but I'm learning to do it with digital as well."

Miller prefers working with black and white film above all. "It's the perfect medium for portraiture, I believe. It shows what is there, without the distraction of colour...it's explicit--stark, even, at times - without revealing everything, so there's still a bit of mystery, of intrigue there."

Miller is available for portraiture of just about any type - and in any medium - digital or 35 millimetre, medium format, or even large format film. Whatever tool will best present what the sitter wants to achieve - and, I hope, a little of what I see in them as well." Some of his work can be seen at www.presquevu.com, and he can be contacted through the site.

We very much look forward to meeting up with CIRCA-CLUB members and guests at our CIRCA event at THE ARTS CLUB on FRIDAY 6th July.

Best Wishes
