THE QUEER YEAR
Adrian
Gillan looks back on 2007 and forward to 2008,
asking Ben Summerskill, Nick Partridge, Peter
Tatchell and others what they made of it all..
Ben Summerskill (Chief Executive, Stonewall -
www.stonewall.org.uk)
Highs of ‘07: Our new “goods and services”
protections, introduced in April, will wrap around
the lives of millions of lesbian/gay people. Better
public services are now on the cards and insurance
companies and hotels will never be able to discriminate
against gay people again. These protections were
secured in the face of determined opposition from
Roman Catholic and Anglican bishops, but decency
(and the power of our prayers!) prevailed. Wish
for ‘08: That our protections for lesbian
mums and gay dads are passed by Parliament, alongside
those against incitement to homophobic hatred;
that every pupil in the country sees one of Stonewall’s
new “Some People are Gay. Get over it!”
posters in their school; and that another million
people join the ranks of employers participating
in Stonewall’s Diversity Champions fairness-at-work
programme ...more...

IVOR
NOVELLO: GAY ICON
Ivor
Novello was called 'the New Valentino' and 'the
British Adonis'. He was introduced to the patron
of the arts, Edward Marsh, and they were friends
for 20 years. Ivor Novello would go round to Edward
Marsh's flat to compose on his piano.
In 1916 he met Bobby Andrews (21 year old actor).
They became friends and lovers and were together
for 35 years. They appeared together in many of
Ivor Novello's plays and musicals.
In 1944 Ivor Novello went to prison at Wormwood
Scrubs for 4 weeks of an 8 week sentence for the
misuse of petrol coupons. He had taken up a fan's
suggestion of using a Rolls Royce and his defence
was that he needed the petrol to be able to drive
to and from the theatre and Redroofs, his house
near Maidenhead, and that his theatre appearances
were 'very important work for morale'. He had also
tried to bribe the officer delivering the summons.
All of this with his plea of not guilty when he
clearly was, led to the rather harsh sentence.
Perhaps the lovely melodies such as “Keep
The Home Fires Burning” and “We'll Gather
Lilacs” with their whistful nostalgia for
a different era will endure longer than the complete
operettas ...more...

SPENCER:THE
SECRETARIAL DIARIES
Edited
Highlights !!! Adrian Gillan
Phone
in, Monday morn, to say I’m taking another
of my ½ day hols – well, I have 50
full days to work through by the end of the year
– though reassuring Boss (albeit via Kevin)
that I’m drafting another think piece from
home today, this time for The Independent, arguing
that, as legal equality falls into place here
in the UK, most of the world is still living in
the homophobic dark ages. More than 70 countries
continue to outlaw homosexuality, with penalties
ranging from one year’s jail to life imprisonment.
Six Islamist states impose the death penalty,
including Saudi Arabia, Iran and Sudan. Of the
191 member states of the UN, only a handful have
repealed all major legal inequalities against
LGBT people: the Netherlands, Belgium, Spain,
France, Germany, Denmark, Sweden, Norway, Finland,
Canada, New Zealand and, very recently, the UK.
