Family: His mother Annabel is a market gardener. His father, Robin, is a businessman who owns and runs an engineering firm. They live in Hungerford, Berkshire. Will Young has a non-identical twin brother, Rupert, and a sister, Emma who is three years older.

Education: Will Young was sent to the preparatory school Horris Hill. At 13 he and his brother were sent to Wellington College where Will Young became head of his house and captain of the athletics team. He represented his school in rugby, football, basketball, athletics, long jump, and the triple jump. .
At the age of 19 he went to Exeter University. While at university he sang in productions He also appeared on the catwalk in fashion shows, and took part in photography sessions. He organised a safe sex ball in which guests were encouraged to arrive in fetish gear. He came out to his family while he was at university. In the summer of 2001 he completed his degree in Politics and was awarded a lower second. In September 2001 he became a student at The Arts Educational school in Chiswick, London, to begin a three-year course in musical theatre on a scholarship.

Work: He became very famous in Britain in January 2002 as he sang his way to the winning position in the ITV television contest Pop Idol. For the contest 10000 people were first auditioned and most were eliminated over 18 weeks. The nation became entranced as the final was reached on 9th. February 2002 with Will Young and the 17-year-old Gareth Gates in competition. During the last week they both went on a campaigning tour around Britain. The press speculated that Will Young's middle-class background would count against him. Gareth Gates was also prettier. It became 'Posh Idol' versus 'Cute Idol'. In the final they both sang Evergreen and Anything is Possible. Gareth Gates also sang Unchained Melody, and Will Young also sang Light My Fire. Young received 4.6 million telephone votes which was 53.1% of the 8.7 million votes cast. Political commentators noted that more people had voted in the Pop Idol final than had voted for the Liberal Democrats in the General Election in 2001.

Friend & Relationships: He came out publicly shortly after winning Pop Idol, and was greatly supported by his already large fanbase. The press revealed that Will Young already had celebrity friends. Not only did he share a flat in Ladbroke Grove with his long-term friend Mary Fellowes, he also took tea with the Duke and Duchess of Gloucester at their home in Kensington Palace.

Greatest Achievement: His first record was released on 25th February, 2002. It achieved sales of one million in one week and went straight to the top of the UK pop chart. It also beat the previous fastest-selling debut, Band Aid's Do They Know It's Christmas in 1984.
