Matthew Williamson

Life Span: Born October 23, 1971

Star Sign: Libra

Famous As: English fashion designer

Matthew Williamson - Gay History celebrates the lives of famous gay men, gay celebrities and gay iconsChildhood: Born in Chorlton, Williamson studied in Manchester until he was 18, when he moved to London to attend school at Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design. He graduated in 1994 with a BA 2:1 in Fashion Design and Printed Textiles.

Friends & Relationships: Williamson is openly gay. He counts celebrities such as Cat Deeley, Sienna Miller, Kelis, Jade Jagger and Plum Sykes amongst his friends, but has often been criticised by others in the fashion industry for using them to promote his designs.

Work: Williamson started his career with two years of work experience with the Georgina Von Etzdorf, Marni and Monsoon. While at Monsoon, Matthew also worked on developing fabric swatches of his own designs containing detailed beading and embroidery. In 1996, after his beaded bags and scarves had caught the attention of Kate, Helena and Amber, Williamson launched his own clothes label with business partner Joseph Velosa. Kate, Helena and Jade Jagger later agreed to model in his London Fashion Week debut show, called Electric Angels.

In 2005, he launched his own perfume range. Whilst continuing at the design helm of his company, in 2006 Matthew took over as the Creative Director at Emilio Pucci, the luxury Italian fashion house owned by LVMH. Having always loved Emilio Pucci’s work from the 60s and 70s, this step was a dream come true for Williamson.

2007 marked the 10 year anniversary for Matthew Williamson, since the debut Electric Angels show back in September 1997. In the same year, a runway show of his designs was incorporated into the video for Prince's song "Chelsea Rodgers" from his Planet Earth album.

His collections are shown twice a year during New York Fashion Week, and they often have an Indian influence, perhaps related to the time Williamson spent working in India for the clothing store Monsoon.

Greatest Achievement: His achievements in the fashion industry have been recognised consistently: Matthew Williamson won Elle designer of the year 2004 was awarded the 2005 Moet & Chandon fashion tribute and has received numerous nominations. He has also been nominated three times as designer of the year at the British fashion awards.

He was ranked, the fifty eighth most influential gay man in the UK.
